Nice Colorado Backpacking photos

A few nice colorado backpacking images I found:

“Running the big rapids is like sex: . . .”

“Running the big rapids is like sex: half the fun lies in the anticipation. Two thirds of the thrill with the approach. The remainder is only ecstasy-or darkness.” Edward Abbey

Kayak eye view of the rapids – Colorado River below Pipe Creek – Grand Canyon National Park – zoomed as much as this little camera will zoom. A lot of the “noise” is actually spray from the rapids.

This is not a difficult rapids – or I would not be goofin’ off like this. This gives one an appreciation of what John Wesley Powell went through in those dories. If you go to the Canyon from the South Rim, go to the IMAX in Tusayan and watch the IMAX. (I get no commission from this -grin-). Pipe Creek Beach at the bottom of the Bright Angel Trail is where rafting trips beach after 5 days from Lee’s Ferry and before the 7 days to the end of their trip.

Fort Meeks – Lee’s Ferry Arizona

In the late 1860’s, increasing Mormon (LDS) settlement from Utah into Northern Arizona created tension with the Navajo ( Diné ). Fearing trouble, the Mormons built Fort Meeks. It was never needed for military purposes and became a trading post and post office – serving peaceful purposes.

The early Mormon pioneer – John Doyle Lee established the ferry crossing that bears his name. The Lees Ferry Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is managed by the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Lee’s Ferry provided the crossing of the Colorado River until 1929 when the original Navajo Bridge was built

This is just before the junction with the River Trail and the Spencer Trail.
